One and done

A while back I mentioned that I have a soft spot in my heart for single-shot music videos (that is, videos done in a single take), and shared some of my favorites. While this is not the original artist, but rather a bunch of college students lip-syncing to "Grace Kelly" by Mika, you have to appreciate the work that went into making the complicated sequence look easy. See the video at Yes But No But Yes.

You also might want to take a pass on the freshly-brewed beer

Like laws and sausage, it's probably best not to see how popcorn is made. BTW, how the hell can this not be a hoax? (via Andy's Blog)

Thick as a brick

Photos of a creepy abandoned Russian fortress. The location was subsequently used by the Russian army to test the influence of napalm-like substance inside brick structures. The extremely high temperatures caused the bricks to literally melt, forming these amazing "brick-sicles". (via Strangeharvest)

Songs In The Key Of Sad

For those of you whose Valentines Day didn't work out like you hoped, you can always wallow in your heartache with 150 songs for sobbing on Valentine's Day. (via List of the Day, which noted, rightly so, that this list is missing Randy Newman's "I Just Want You To Hurt Like I Do")

Do-It-Yourself...

...add your own "pianist" joke here.

You know the old one about the surgeon visiting the guy in the hospital who just had his hands operated on?
"Will I be able to play the piano, doc?" he asks.
"Of course. I don't see why not," replies the surgeon.
"Great!" says the man. "Because I never could before!"

Luckily, there are still other, uh... things... that he could still use to play the piano.

Must... fight urge... to make a... "White Shadow"... reference

Awesome shadow puppets from Owly Shadow Puppets. We bought a couple of these from her for our boys last summer at an art festival and they are great. Laser-cut from really tough cardboard, these things just look super-cool, not to mention fun to play with.

I don't see any more of the retro-looking robot that we picked up, which is still my fave, but the Yeti and tooth fairy are pretty sweet.

Surprising graffiti. Click to see the punchline. Brilliant.

A similar play of light and shadow can be found in the sculptures of Shigeo Fukuda, who could weld together a seeming jumble of 848 forks, knives and spoons and make a perfect motorcycle. More of his amazing work can be found here and here. Sadly, Shigeo died January 11, 2009, after suffering a subarachnoid hemorrhage.

Amazing shadow basketball. Why can't we have a TV show like this in the US?!

Can resist... no longer... Every episode of the 1978-81 TV series "White Shadow" (featuring fabulously-feathered hair on top of mushmouthed meathead Timothy Van Patten, a/k/a "Salami") can be streamed for free at IMDB. W00t!

Scaramouche! Scaramouche! Will you do the fandango?

I saw this unfolding the other day on Digg, and it tickled me. Tonight I found this very nice recap of the Digg community comment-singing "Bohemian Rhapsody".

Submitted by someone after he found a tape marked "Seth's Bar Mitzvah 1993". Quite possibly the worst karaoke session in recorded history.

The scene from Boogie Nights where Dirk Diggler tries to extend his career into the recording studio with a truly horrific version of "The Touch" a/k/a the theme song to 1986's Transformers:The Movie. I can usually crack Mrs. Captnkurt up by belting out a Diggleresque (i.e. all strained and off-key) "You got the touch!"
